According to the recent study - which monitored 172 couples, who wanted to add daughters to their families and had conceived mostly sons - expectant mothers can increase the likelihood of giving birth to a baby girl by including fruits and vegetables in their daily diet.
The theory is that levels of minerals in the blood can affect the unfertilised egg, making it more receptive to either male or female chromosomes.
Researchers discovered that around 80 percent of the couples in the study conceived daughters after consuming a diet rich in calcium and magnesium in the weeks before conception. The diet included foods such as fruits, cheese, leafy greens and rice. Participants were also given supplements and had their blood measured for levels of calcium and magnesium. In addition, the women avoided foods high in potassium and sodium such as bananas and potatoes, as they are thought to be more boy-friendly.
The study participants were also asked to conceive at a specific point in their cycle; three to four days before ovulation occurs.
The reason for this is that “male sperm”, which carry the X chromosome, are faster swimmers but they die quicker, too. Female sperm, which carry the X chromosome, linger around longer. So, if you try to conceive right before ovulation - when the egg is released - the female sperm may be the only ones left once the egg makes its way down to be fertilised. Researchers of this study, however, believe the diet had a greater impact on the outcomes than the time of conception.

Annet Noorlander, a biologist who led the research said, “People now know that if they do everything we have suggested, their chances of having a girl will improve dramatically. This method is experimental, but we have proved it works.”
