Time of ovulation is a key element for conceiving a girl: girls are more likely to be conceived if the parents have sex 2-3 days BEFORE ovulation. This is due to a couple of important facts about human sperm:
The weaker Y chromosomal sperm (aka Boy Sperm) swims faster toward the egg and dies because the egg is not ready.

Charting her basal body temperature: Before getting out of bed in the morning and before any activity at all, she should take her basal temperature using a basal thermometer. A spike in temperature usually occurs just prior to ovulation.
Use an Ovulation Prediction Kit: This kit help predict when the Luteinizing hormone (LH) is surging in a woman’s body. LH is a precursor to ovulation that usually occurs within 24 hours after the surge.

Less Scientific means to conceive a girl
For couples who prefer to not get too caught up in the details, they can use more traditional methods in their attempt to assure the conception of a girl. Along with the general idea of having sex 2-3 days before ovulation, they can use different sexual positions that are rumored to help and change their diets to make the body more conducive to gender selection.
Sexual Position: Although it is more theory than science, it is believed that the Missionary Position is preferable for couples who want to conceive a girl. The reason for this is that the penis may not penetrate as fully, thus allowing the slower X sperm to have a longer distance to travel to the egg.
Diet changes: Consuming more acidic foods may help cause the vagina to be more acidic. Consume coffee, tea, dairy products, artificial sweeteners, sugar, poultry and meats to increase acidity within the female body.
